Over a multi-year term, Meta is purchasing environmental attribute certificates (EACs) linked to recycled PET production from MacroCycle's first commercial plant.
- For Meta, the transaction targets emissions from the plastics in its supply chain.
- For MacroCycle, the partnership fast-tracks development of its first American PET recycling and production plant.
MacroCycle Technologies and Meta today signed an agreement under which Meta will purchase environmental attribute certificates (EACs) linked to recycled PET polymer produced at MacroCycle’s first commercial plant in the Southeastern U.S. Companies purchase EACs to drive demand for lower-carbon materials, address emissions from plastics in their supply chains, and help scale and finance early-stage manufacturing.
MacroCycle, a U.S. manufacturer, will generate third-party verified EACs by producing recycled PET (rPET) — a lightweight plastic commonly used in packaging and textiles. MacroCycle’s novel chemical recycling approach turns waste-grade PET into low-carbon, high-value material capable of replacing fossil-fuel based PET. For Meta, this is one avenue to address emissions from plastics in its supply chain.
The agreement supports MacroCycle scaling up production for recycled PET in the U.S. market, starting with their first commercial plant in the Southeastern U.S., anticipated to produce 5,000 tonnes of recycled PET plastic annually. The plant will scale the company’s proprietary SolvoGenesis™ platform, a solvent-based process that dissolves, purifies, and upcycles PET from mixed and contaminated plastic waste that conventional mechanical recycling cannot handle. Meta’s multi-year EAC agreement provides the long-term product demand MacroCycle needs to finance plant construction.
“Most recycling forces a trade-off: mechanical processes are cheap but degrade the material with every cycle and struggle with complex waste streams. Chemical processes that break PET all the way down to its monomers are energy-hungry and expensive,” said Stwart Pena Feliz, Co-Founder & CEO of MacroCycle Technologies. “SolvoGenesis™ sidesteps the tradeoff. We dissolve and purify PET while keeping the polymer chain intact, which is why we can take the mixed, blended, and contaminated waste that other processes reject and still come out with virgin-quality material at a fraction of the energy. The feedstock that is difficult for others to use is the feedstock we are built for.”
“Reaching net zero means advancing lower-carbon solutions across our supply chain and in the materials we use,” said Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy, at Meta. “We have been working to address emissions across our supply chain on materials like cement and steel, and our early procurement of materials from these sectors helped pave the way for the maturing markets we see now. We hope this transaction with MacroCycle will have a similar outcome in the plastics market.”
Meta’s agreement will support Macrocycle’s first American plant, which will create U.S.-based jobs through construction and ongoing operations. It will also divert PET and polyester waste from landfills and incinerators, easing the local environmental and public health burdens both create.
The United States imports over 40% of virgin PET and over 20% of recycled PET. Meanwhile, domestic rPET capacity is shrinking, so imports will likely grow. MacroCycle’s plant is one entry point to address this imbalance. By turning American plastic waste into American-made recycled PET, MacroCycle will help build a domestic and more resilient supply chain.
About MacroCycle Technologies
MacroCycle Technologies is an advanced polymer manufacturing company that converts textile and packaging waste into high-purity, virgin-quality recycled PET using its proprietary dissolution recycling SolvoGenesis™ platform. Unlike mechanical recycling, which struggles with mixed, blended, and contaminated materials, MacroCycle’s solvent-based process can handle a much broader range of real-world plastic waste, unlocking recycling for the millions of tons of PET that are landfilled or incinerated each year. MacroCycle is building its first commercial-scale plant in the U.S. Southeast. MacroCycle was founded in 2023 out of MIT, and is currently HQ’ed in Cambridge, MA. It has raised over $10M in total capital to date. Its earliest supporters include Breakthrough Energy, Clean Energy Ventures, and Volta Circle, the family office of the founders/owners of one of the largest PET producers in the world.
